'The Badger' launches online community for automotive students

Ruth Badger, former star of The Apprentice, has launched an exciting new community for automotive apprentices. The community, 'Accelerate', gives valuable information and support to 16-24 year olds starting out in the automotive industry. Ruth Badger introduced Accelerate at a launch event at The Manchester College.

Accelerate costs £10 to join and gives automotive apprentices careers advice, discounts on tools, the chance to enter competitions and an NUS card, allowing them the same benefits as other students. The online community is run by IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry).

Ruth Badger inspired students at the event with a talk on the benefits of apprenticeships. ‘The Badger’, as she is affectionately known, is passionate about apprenticeships, having started her career on a Youth Training Scheme. Students also met representatives of local businesses, such as First Bus Group, Greater Manchester Police and Evans Halshaw.

No one ever tells you how important you are as an apprentice. You have a career, not just a job

Ruth Badger said: ‘No one ever tells you how important you are when you are an apprentice. The IMI are giving students so much of an opportunity. They are highlighting that you have a career, not just a job.’

Dave Spedding, head of Automotive at The Manchester College, said: ‘Accelerate is a fantastic scheme. Anything that draws students into the automotive sector is brilliant.’
